Photography 101

Photography is a tough art to master, but once you do you will be amazed at what you can do. Below are our first three steps you should master to pass photography 101:

1. The camera. We highly recommend purchasing a DSLR. Cannon vs Nikon is like saying Mac vs PC. To each his own. But once you pick out your new camera be sure to be familiar with all of the buttons/features. We are big fans of shooting daily. Take 5-10 minutes each day to shoot something …anything. This builds your confidence with your new camera.

2. Lighting. This is by far the most important thing to master when beginning to photograph. Natural light is always the best lighting, but do not shoot outdoors when the sun is directly above your head (ie. noon). When you are outdoors make sure to always but the sun behind your subject. If you are shooting indoors set up next to a window that gets the most natural light.

3. Balance. We don’t mean stand on one leg and shoot. We’re talking about the balance in your final shot. You don’t always need to have your subject dead center. Photography is all about the rule of thirds (see below).
